2019-3-20 IPv4 compatible address: used by dual-stack nodes that are communicating with IPv6 over an IPv4 infrastructure. When the IPv4-compatible address is used as an IPv6 destination, IPv6 traffic is automatically encapsulated with an IPv4 header and sent to the destination by using the IPv4. This will cause the IP address on the Mac computer to remain the same, and not change. This is useful when the Mac computer needs to be remotely accessible, and NAT settings (such as port forwarding or DMZ) have been configured in the router. This document describes how to manually configure the TCP/IP settings within Mac OS X.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a number that identifies each computer across the Internet or a network. When you connect to the Internet or an IP network, your computer needs an IP address.
By default, MAC OS X is configured as a DHCP client. However, if MAC OS X has been configured with a static (manually configured) IP address, and if the computer needs to receive an IP address automatically, then MAC OS X will need to be reconfigured as a DHCP client. This document describes how to configure for DHCP setup.
Your IP address can be provided in two main ways:

Automatically: Your computer is assigned an address using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

Manually: Your ISP or network administrator gives you an IP address, and you enter it in the Network pane of System Preferences.
Follow these steps to enter your IP address or have it assigned automatically.

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.

Select the network connection you want to use (such as Ethernet) in the list.

Click the Configure IPv4 pop-up menu, then choose an option:

If your address will be assigned automatically, choose Using DHCP.

If your ISP or administrator gave you an IP address, choose Manually and enter the address in the IP Address field. Your ISP most likely gave you additional information such as the subnet mask, router, and Domain Name System (DNS) server address. Enter the subnet mask and router in the labeled fields. To enter the DNS server address, click Advanced, click DNS, then click the Add button and enter the address.

Note: Most IP addresses are IPv4 addresses, which look like a series of numbers separated by three periods, similar to this: 123.45.67.89. If you received an IP address that’s a longer series of numbers and letters, divided by seven colons (for example, fa80:0000:0000:0123:0203:93ee:ef5b:44a0), it’s a different type of IP address called IPv6. To enter an IPv6 address, in Network preferences, click Advanced. In TCP, change the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu to Manually, and enter your IPv6 address.

Before you jump into this configuration, make sure that you’ve configured the Internet settings within System Preferences. That way, you’ll already have entered your default email and Web settings.
Using your internal modem
Follow these steps to set up your Internet connection if you’re using your Mac’s internal modem:
1. Click the System Preferences icon on the Dock and choose Network.
2. Select Internal Modem from the Show drop-down list.
3. Click the TCP/IP tab (as shown in Figure 1) and enter the settings for the type of connection that your ISP provides:
• If your ISP tells you to use PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol): Click the Configure IPv4 drop-down list and choose Using PPP. If your ISP provided you with DNS Server or Search Domain addresses, type them now in the corresponding boxes.
• If you’re using AOL: Click the Configure IPv4 drop-down list and choose AOL Dialup. If AOL provided you with DNS Server or Search Domain addresses, click in the corresponding box and type them now.
• If you’re using a manual connection: Click the Configure IPv4 drop-down list box and choose Manually. Then click in the IP Address, DNS Servers, and Search Domains fields and enter the respective settings provided by your ISP.

4. Click the PPP tab to display the settings shown in Figure 2.

5. In their respective fields, enter the account name, password, telephone number, and (optionally) the service provider name and an alternate telephone number provided by your ISP.

If your ISP includes the Service Provider name and a PPPoE Service Name, you can enter those as well.
6. To allow everyone who uses your Mac to access the Internet with this account, mark the Save Password check box to enable it.
Enable the Show PPPoE Status in Menu Bar check box. When you do, Mac OS X displays a menu bar icon that lets you know the status of your PPPoE connection.
7. Press COMMAND+Q to exit System Preferences and save your changes.
